Leanplum is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join our newly founded and rapidly growing team in New York City. You will join several senior team members as part our first engineering team in NYC -- a “mini-startup” within Leanplum, highly focused on expanding usage and adoption of our mobile-first email product. As a member of the Email team, you’ll work on projects across our tech stack to ensure our customers can compose, send and analyze the hundreds of millions of emails they send every month with Leanplum.Some example projects you’ll work on:

  • Build world-class Email composition and preview tools
  • Help our customers get their job done easier by automating the outdated manual processes associated with sending marketing email at scale
  • Audit different Email Service Providers and integrate them with our internal message pipelines
  •  Architect systems that ensure we meet our strict internal SLOs and uptime standards
  • Trace sent emails across our infrastructure, to monitor performance and data integrity
  • Define and develop tools that help our customers manage their email deliverability and effectiveness
  • Work with machine learning engineers to implement predictive models that make creating and sending email even easier


  • CS degree or equivalent
  • 5+ years of experience in software development
  • Expert experience with a modern programming language, high personal standards of clean and maintainable code
  • Confidence in working with a large, multi-language codebase made up of many different services
  • Ability to design performant systems that can handle our constantly increasing scale (serving over 1 billion mobile devices tracking over 6 billion analytical events/day equating to over 17,000 requests/second and in the end generating over 1.5TB/day of data)
  • Comfortable analyzing and debugging performance issues across distributed systems


  • Work with designers and product managers to design and deliver reliable, maintainable and scalable systems
  • Build robust production systems, complete with automated testing, monitoring and alerting
  • Collaborate closely with fellow engineers to review architecture, technical designs and code
  • Work closely with product and design to deliver best-in-class customer experience
